FAIRFAX, Calif. — Homeowners preparing for wildfire season can check whether their property has a defensible-space and home-hardening evaluation through the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority. The agency identifies Fairfax as part of its Central Marin and Ross Valley service area, along with nearby communities.
How inspections generally work
Marin Wildfire says the area is served by teams of seasonal defensible-space inspectors. Properties are typically visited on an every-other-year cycle, depending on location. Unlike some zones that offer inspections by request, the agency says requests in Central Marin and Ross Valley typically are not available. Owners should check the agency’s own instructions rather than assume that calling automatically creates an appointment.
What residents can review
Defensible-space evaluations address vegetation and combustible conditions around buildings, while home hardening considers how a structure might resist flying embers. An inspection does not guarantee protection against wildfire, and some recommended steps may involve property-specific conditions or permits.
Alerts and evacuation plans are separate
Property inspections are preparedness tools, not a warning service for active fires. Fairfax residents should separately register for AlertMarin, learn their evacuation zone and identify safe departure routes. Marin County’s emergency portal is the appropriate place to check active incidents. If an evacuation order is issued, leave immediately according to official instructions.
